The Audio Recorder/Player Database

Manufacturer: AudiOfax Corporation (AudiOfax)
Model: AudiOfax
Type: magnetic disc
Place of origin: Scotsdale, Ariz
Date of manufacture: 1963

Comments: One of the sorriest office dictation systems ever offered to the public, the AudiOfax revived the magnetic disc concept that would be so successful for computing but had repeatedly failed to find a market for voice recording since the Brush Mail-A-Voice of 1945-6. What the AudiOfax contributed to this string of failures was an incredibly cheap design that reduced sound quality and general usability to vanishingly low levels. The only feature of the AudiOfax that was executed well was its advertising campaign, which produced some very nice brochures. AudiOfax Corp. was located in Arizona, but the recorder was made in Japan by a manufacturer who would probably like us to forget its association with this product. Sold for under $100 at a time when a \"real\" office dictation recorder cost upwards of two to three times that amount.
